Barometer findings: Positive signs

Monday 07.05.2018 // Middle East Insurance Review // Henner Alms and Andreas Bollmann

Messrs Henner Alms and Andreas Bollmann of Dr. Schanz, Alms & Company, which authored the Africa Insurance Barometer on behalf of the AIO, share some of their takes on the African insurance industry in light of this year’s Barometer outcomes.

The mood in the market has improved greatly compared to the past couple of years which witnessed deep economic recession due mainly to the drop of commodity prices, said Mr Alms. “The sentiment has swung to more positive territory compared to the past where interviewees were rather sceptical and saw the downward movement as having hit bottom. The interviewees see slight improvement and are more upbeat for the next 12 months.”

He noted that the recent economic improvement in the continent is expected to translate to higher public revenues, leading to improved infrastructure spending in the medium-to-long term.
